A boat trip round the island of Milos

This anti-clockwise journey has to be the best way to explore the unique coastline of this geological jewel.

The approximate itinerary is listed below, along with photographs of what you might expect to see.

Tickets can be booked on the harbour front the day or so before the boat goes.

We went on 9th September 2008 and it cost 25 euros each.

Leaving Adamas at 9.30am

Plaka and Tripiti above and Klima below as we travel out of the gulf

On to Vani – manganese ore mine and geological example of ‘sheeting’

Triades with Ag. Nikolaos Monastery above

Sykia, collapsed roof of cave with sunlight from above (demonstrating the skill of the captain in reversing close in for a good view), then the stark contrast between black & white rocks

Psalidi, more caves and weird weathering

Kelftiko – layered compressed rocks. Pirates’ hideaway until 1824.

Eroded caves, awe-inspiring rock formations, presumably sufficient for pirates to conceal their vessels from the Navy and get some protection from storms. Dramatic columns jut out of the water.

Past Profitas Elias and on to Provatas Beach (above)

Firiplaka – red and white rocks, and a bit like tiramisso. There's a clay mine above the beach itself.

Tsigrados Beach – stumpy ladder and steep sand bank to get on to the beach

Kalamos – amazing sandy run off from above forming pyramidal shaped heaps

Kiriaki Beach and fishing boats

Paliochori Beach – psychedelic rocks loom above you and sulphur bubbles rise to the surface of the sea...

...as well as having a taverna that cooks its food in the volcanically-heated sand (these two photos were from a separate visit on the local bus service)

Paliorema and ‘Theioryxia’, the Sulphur mines

Lunch on the neighbouring island of Kimolos. The harbour and beach of Psathi with the town of Kimolos above.

Pollonia on the North West corner of Milos

Kalogiros – island/rock in the sea east of Pollonia

Glaronissia - Organ pipe-like rock formation of island North of Ag. Konstantinos beach

Sarakinikos – extraordinary lunar landscape of bare eroded white rock

Mandrakia – Below Triavassalos, little cove studded with boat garages (syrmata) and white chapel on top

Firopotamos – Pretty fishing hamlet

Around the headland down into Platiena Bay and past Arkoudes - the bear-like rocks whose jaws welcome people into the Gulf of Milos

Fourkovouni

Emborios

Klima with its colourful boat garages (syrmata) and Tripiti on the hill above – and the Roman theatre + the catacombs hidden on the hillside

Back to Adamas by 6.30pm
