Getting to Astypalaia

Getting to the island requires a spot of research on the web but it’s well worth the effort...These details were accurate in 2008, but may have altered.

Check out the ferry schedule: https://www.danae.gr

The Nissos Kalymnos comes from the island of the same name and arrives around 10.30am.

You can fly from Athens on a domestic flight with Sky Express and Hahn Air.

Getting around Astypalaia

Other than hiring your own vehicle there’s a bus service extending from Livadi – Chora – Pera Gialos – Limani (campsite) – Maltezana (Analipsi) with one a day going via the airport to coincide with Olympic flights. There are timetables next to the bus stops and it’s worth checking them out to plan your trip as they are subject to change in September as the frequency reduces. Fares (2008) ranged from €1 per passenger Livadi – Chora – Pera Gialos and €1.50 Chora – Pera Gialos – Limani (campsite) – Maltezana (Analipsi).

There are also a couple of taxis that provide another option and are driven at a gentle pace. You can phone them, but we found it easier to be impulsive when we saw one. They don’t tend to prowl like most. Our driver had a little bunch of good luck basil, which he rubbed on the journey and created a lovely aroma – a million times better than those dreadful air fresheners – and considerately kept the cigarette between his lips unlit until we disembarked at Maltezana.

There are several car hire outlets in Pera Gialos and we hired a jeep from Vergouli, just up from the bus stop and round the corner from the museum. Kostas and Michael are very helpful and we can recommend them. The jeep was a perfect vehicle for driving up in the hills on the dirt roads.

They've updated their fleet considerably since we were there:  VERGOULI
