Assos Castle

The Venetian fortress sits high on top of the peninsula. It is a great sunset destination, but naturally I marched up there in the full heat of the afternoon. It took me about 40 minutes to reach the top and around 20 minutes to come back down again - it afforded some spectacular views on the way!

It dates from 1585

The curving brickwork through the entrance gate is fabulous

The fortress had 60 public buildings and 200 private houses within its defences
