THE DROGARATI CAVE
Close to Sámi near the hamlet of Chaliotáta
You know something strange is going on as soon as you start to descend - the temperature quickly drops and there's moss growing on the rocks ... in Greece!
Further down you go (wear sensible footwear as it can be damp under foot)
Wham! The most amazing forms and colours greet you, as stalactites and stalagmites mingle with weirdly shaped rocks, with the iron/copper/salt/calcium deposits creating fabulous hues.
Unearthly shapes and 'melting' stone
Huge overhangs and fins
Some of the stalactites are immense, and you steadily make your way to the floor of the cave
60 metres below the surface with a total internal area of 900 square metres the acoustics are superb, and indeed, classical concerts are held here (Maria Callas came here to sing).
You make your way back up into the daylight and the heat, blinking in wonder at the marvels below.
