Tavernas & Food
There must be hundreds of great places to eat on Kefaloniá and we only had time to try a handful of those, but the overall culinary standard and excellence of ingredients really came across. Below are some of those that we experienced and the service was always really friendly, cheerful and helpful.
Recommed the local house/village wine - Kefaloniá produces some great wines and a caráfe of the local wine is nearly always good and tremendous value.
FOIS
Located on theAg. Helis beach road with a tremendous new roof over the outdoor seating area and a splendid piece of planting as the centrepiece - shown above.
A charming taverna with an English hostess from Shropshire and a comprehesive menu, and we had several meals here,
A good garlicy Tzadsiki
Gigantes (butter beans) with a nice sauce which also had a touch of spice and dill
Great prawn saganaki - prawns in a lovely sauce that tasted like it had been made from sun-dried tomatoes and fried cheese on top
Excellent Horta - Mountain green with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon
Nice fillet of fish with a generous garlic sauce
TO ENETIKO
The lower level taverna at Avithos beach with a sea view
We had a lunchtime snack of Mythos beer,
very good whitebait
aubergine salad
and a huge Greek salad
As an evening meal we had
courgette balls - shaped like an ice-puck, deep-fried courgette/?garam flour with dill flavour
A 'Fisherman's plate for 2' - stunning (and shown above) a tray covered with huge prawns, a variety of small deep fried fish, kalamari and a good-sized grilled fish (sea bream/bass) on a bed of lettuce, tomato and cucumber - superb
Also had red mullet on another occasion which was jolly good too
Complimentary melon finished the meals off perfectly
PREVIEW
The upper level taverna at Avithos beach
From the decking of the restaurant you have a good sea view.
There is an extensive wine list.
We had a starter:-
flavoursome whitebait in a rich tomato-based sauce
grilled vegetables (courgette, carrot, potato & fleshy ?chanterlle mushrooms) with a touch of balsamic vinegar
Main course:-
Fishcakes with garlic mashed potatoes and stuffed tomatoes - all beautifully presented
We managed a pudding of walnut cake and chocolate ice cream and a set milk pudding to round off the meal
We also had complimentary Greek grappa and then to cap it all off a very kind couple of English tourists gave us a lift back up the hill
THE GARDEN
In Svoronáta on the road south of the crossroads, which eventually leads to Hotel Irene, the Ag. Helis road and Ammes beach
The setting for this traditional-style restaurant is great, with two satellite seating areas set in well set-out and tended gardens, the bushes resembling the waves of the sea, we had
A good Greek salad with very tasty feta cheese
Gigantes (big beans)
Very moist and enjoyable swordfish steaks
Large grilled prawns
SPIROS
In Svoronáta on the main road, just along from the petrol station
Salt cod in garlic sauce
Very rich and luxurious briam (aubergine in lots of olive oil and sauce and a parmesan-type cheese)
Very nice Horta (mountain greens)
A huge plateful of kalimari
Excellent taramousalata
Grilled peppers stuffed with cheese (yum)
Tuna Surprise - a fun take on salad nicoise, but with a huge hollowed out tomato filled with tuna
GEMINI
In Svoronáta on the road south of the crossroads, which eventually leads to Hotel Irene, the Ag. Helis road and Ammes beach
Melt in the mouth pizza
Tasy anchovie spaghetti
Crisp green salad
Complimentary large metaxas and macaroons
Great value - the Greeks like their caged birds, but shame to see a splendid African grey parrot in a small cage
ACROPOLIS
In Svoronáta on the road south of the crossroads, which eventually leads to Hotel Irene, the Ag. Helis road and Ammes beach
Large restaurant with extensive menu and considerable seating capacity
Nice vegetable in tomato sauce spaghetti
Good gigantes and Tzadsiki
Seafood spaghetti slightly over-salted
PETANI BEACH
At the north-west end of the Palikí peninsula, 15-20 minutes drive from Lixoúri
We had a relaxed lunch at the left taverna, as you look up from the beach
One small greek salad
We had a grilled sea bream each - fantastic value and local caught (literally just off the beach)
NOVITA
On the seafront at Lixoúri
We had a very nice vegetarian crépe and stuffed tomatoes
This was a quick stop on our way to Xi beach and the menu looked good
OASIS
On the seafront at Lixoúri
We'd taken the ferry over from Argostóli and decided to have a very long lunch
Vegetarian omlette - perfect
Tasty stuffed peppers and tomatoes
Season salad - a lot of the island's produce comes from the Palikí peninsula, and this salad was seriously fresh and crunchy
Fried potatoes - in discs and nicely done
KALAFATIS
On the seafront at Argostóli - Drapanos end - one of, if not the, oldest restaurants estabished in 1945
We had a lunchtime meal
Good Tzadsiki
Great cheese omlette
Huge tuna roll with salad etc
Excellent deep-fried sardines (called 'Arogant' on the menu)
The harbour-side seating area has decking right over the waters edge and sizeable fish compete for scraps of bread, along with the first duckling we've seen in Greece
