The Island of Pátmos

Kalikátsou

The southern end of the sandy part of Pétra beach (Gríkou) sweeps round towards the Kalikátsou rock.

The volcanic outcrop has some wondefully weathered features - Pétra means 'Stone' in Greek.

It also affords a different aspect looking back towards both Pétra beach & Gríkou

The writings of Christódoulos mention an 11th century hermitage and it seems likely that the many man-made carvings in the rock were made by these Paleo-Christian hermits. It has steps, a cistern and numerous sections carved from the rock that may have been used to store coal or place candles.

There is a legend that a tunnel runs from the Monastery of St John at Chóra all the way down to Pétra, such that the monks could transfer treasures in the event of a pirate attack.
