Pera Gialos (Skala)

Pera Gialos is situated around the bay to the North of Chora. The bay acts as beach, fishing harbour and jetty to ferries and larger vessels.

The capital’s charm extends down the hill to Pera Gialos where, en route, you encounter some small (but perfectly formed) clothes shops, DVD hire shop, real estate agent, jewellers, a stylish bathroom/plumbing outlet and a sizeable pharmacy.

And a splendid, well-stocked garden/plant shop

In Pera Gialos there are more clothes/gift shops, children’s shop, bookshop, supermarkets, and an antiques shop. The Emporiki Bank is open in the morning but the ATM is 24-hour. There’s a travel agent with an Olympic sign on the wall outside.

Tavernas & Food

There are many excellent places to eat in and around Pera Gialos.

Getting there and getting around

There are several car and bike hire outlets by the harbour and we hired a jeep from Vergouli by the museum.

Museum

The museum is well worth a look and free admission.

Boat Trip

Two boats in the harbour offer trips to nearby islets, local beaches and sometimes a round-the-island trip – you need to check with the Captain the day before; we spent two lovely days aboard the Seabird with Captain Ioannis and his wife.

The harbour has had the benefit of an injection of EU funds that led to the building of a jetty at right angles to the main quay, which provides a safer haven for yachts and the occasional luxury private motor cruiser/gin palace (it's fun to go for a stroll before dinner and see what's in the harbour that night). Needless to say, we were never awake at four in the morning when the Blue Star from Piraeus docked and didn't hear anything from where we were staying, but it might be a little noisy if you were staying down near the port when the passengers and vehicles disembark.

The beach is pebbly and makes a nice place to swim, relax and watch yachts and boats coming and going.

By night the lighting is subtle and reflects beautifully off the water.
