Avithos Beach
September 2005
A couple of kilometres south-east of Svoronáta.
A beautiful long, narrow (red-ish) sandy beach which shelves gradually into the sea.
The beach experienced a bad storm around May 2005 which pulled a great deal of sand off the beach to expose the pebbles and larger smooth stones beneath, so you may want to take some neoprene shoes/jellies to get in and out of the water.
This happened once before many years ago and the sand gradually returned to the lower level of the beach, so hopefully it will repair itself again over time. Despite that, the sand is still present on the upper level - as seen above - and it is a lovely beach.
Sunbed and umbrella hire available.
It has a kantina on the beach, with pebbles on the counter decorated by visitors over the years, as well as two excellent tavernas by the entrance from the road.
From the beach you can see Zakynthos on a clear day and also the nearby tiny islet of Días (shown above),
Días was named after another little island off Crete; it used to have an alter to Zeus and sacrifices on Mount Aínos were carried out at the same time via smoke signal communication.
