Ad Astral Podcast, Episode 20:

Thriskia's Life Bank-Shownotes

Submitted by DJ Burnham on Friday 29th March 2013

(Thriskia's Life Bank was written in September 2005 on Kefalonia. This podcast is the second time it has been published. It first appeared in Volume 1, Issue 1 of The Literary Bone in February 2007.)

Although Thriskia's Life Bank was written in Kefalonia in June 2006 it was influenced by a trip to India earlier that year, in particular a visit to the extraordinary city of Varanasi. Essentially it's an alien representation of that remarkable experience in which this story opens. Being rowed on the Ganges at sunrise with the fantastic backdrop of the ghats, where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions and the steps behind them lead up to a bewildering collection of multi-coloured shrines, temples and palaces is something that made a lasting impression on me. Later on, the Life Bank itself was, in part, born out of a visit to Jantar Mantar in Jaipur (earlier in that trip to India), which is a fabulous collection of astronomical and astrological instruments - the artwork for this episode features one of the Gnome buildings of the zodiac.

The original artwork shows a photograph I took of one of the Gnomes of Jantar Mantar, above which I superimposed one of the Life Bank's "Divine Equipment" / transfer apparatus boxes using hourglasses to simulate the exchange of a period of life from one individual to another.

Ben du Boulay "I listened to Journey into Space on the radio as a boy and (very much) more recently Ad Astral when I was far away in New Zealand last year. In both cases I was transported across space and time for a lovely while. So I was thrilled to be asked to attend Ad Astral HQ and take part in an episode. None of it was quite what I expected, except for the wonderful cheery and generous welcome from Dave and Sue. I am really looking forward to hearing how my words are slotted into the overall whole by Dave the Magician."

Terry Clark: Has spent much of his time hiding behind trees and some say he's barking mad.

An early appearance in an Ibsen play as teenager marked the high point of his thespian career, after that it was all downhill...that is until Ad Astral revived his flagging fortunes
