SuperGalactic Radio-Shownotes

Parsec Award 2014 Nominee

Submitted by DJ Burnham on Tuesday 1st April 2014

(SuperGalactic Radio was written in September 2013 on the Greek island of Andros. This is its first appearance.)

I love music and as a kid I used to listen to the Pirate Station, Radio Caroline (hence SuperGalactic Radio being broadcast on Blixo band 319 and the ship being the Mi Amigo II). Back in the late 70s I did a radio show at school, which I based around Kenny Everett's style on Radio Capital. It seemed like a great idea to set a story on board a radio station flying through space, broadcasting alien music across the sector. I got really excited at the idea of futuristic advertisements and jingles, galactic traffic and weather reports, and news from around the sector, so needless to say this episode was a lot of fun to write and to make. It wasn't until I was sitting on a beach on the Greek island of Andros that I actually came up with a plot. The seed of the idea came from ITV's GMTV and the BBC's Blue Peter phone-ins when there were problems in about 2007/2008 with competition-fixing where results had been pre-determined. I started thinking about what sort of competition SuperGalactic Radio could run and then how it could get it into trouble.

The original artwork shows an alien with a pair of headphones on listening to the radio and forms not only the logo for this episode, but also the logo of SuperGalactic Radio

Thanks to George and Gella Despotopoulos for making our stay at Villa Galazio in Batsi on Andros so enjoyable in September 2013: this story was written on the beach there.

In both cases I was transported across space and time for a lovely while. So I was thrilled to be asked to attend Ad Astral HQ and take part in an episode. None of it was quite what I expected, except for the wonderful cheery and generous welcome from Dave and Sue. I am really looking forward to hearing how my words are slotted into the overall whole by Dave the Magician."
